Network disconnects – the phantom menace

For a few years I’ve been running a Windows 11 machine as a host for VirtualBox Linux hosts. Plenty of memory and 32 CPUs so I can happily run a couple of VMs with my various lab playgrounds. Invariably, it’s something to stick an Oracle database on. Of late, I’ve migrated from Oracle Linux 7 to 8 to 9… I’ve also updated my 19c Oracle databases to 23c and now 26ai to get some new features and just keep up with the tech.

The Oracle database is a repository for some of my home IT projects – notably my ADS-B collector (https://cynicalgsd.com/2026/01/19/building-an-ads-b-flight-tracker-with-oracle-23ai-and-python/), however I have noticed lately that the stability of the connections into the database from the python app has been sub-optimal. I thought it was me. Looked at networking settings in Virtualbox and on the PC itself but nothing really helped.

So this week, since I am retired, I installed Centos 10 as a VM, shoved Oracle 26ai on it and rebuilt my databases. Not a single network disconnect!

Not sure why Oracle Linux is dropping the ball and frankly, that’s not a problem I need to solve any more. It works on Centos and I was also able to get Oracle Veridata running against this lab setup, so I am very happy.
